Borger is a place in the province Drenthe and is called ‘de hunebedhoofdstad van Nederland’, the captial of the dolmen.
It might not surpise you that the dolmen are the main reason to visit Borger. The province Drenthe has 52 dolmen and 16 of them are in the close area of Borger. The dolmen are built more or less 5000 year ago and are the oldest monuments in The Netherlands. They were built by people called ‘het trechterbekervolk’ and served as a tomb. The dead got many gifts like tools and jewelry. Those gifts can be seen in the museum.
The Dutch name for the dolmen is ‘hunnebed’, related from the word ‘huyne’ which meant giant.
