Even if the Netherlands is a small country, Dutch is not the only official language. The Netherlands has a second official language which is called Frisian. This language is spoken in the north of the Netherlands, in the province Friesland. In this province, Frisian is thaught at most primary schools and also on the streets in Friesland you will hear this language. So don’t be surprised if you go to Friesland and you don’t understand anything of the ‘Dutch’ they speak over there. You are not the only one because most of the Dutch people also don’t understand it. Frisian is an offical language since 1956.
