A new fun fact on Friday. It sounds strange to eat a biscuit with mices but it is a tradition in the Netherlands. It began in the 18th century when people believed that anice would stimulate the milk production of the mother. That’s why they coated anice seeds with sugar to celebrate that the mother and child survived the birth.
‘Beschuit met muisjes’ became a real tradition in 1938 when the former queen Beatrix was born. Since that time people eat it every time a child is born. The color of the ‘muisjes’ shows if it is a boy or a girl. Blue is the color for a boy, pink means that a girl has been born.
